iTranslate Updated To Version 7.1, Brings Updated Design To The iPad
Allyson Kazmucha, iMore
Apple Retreats To The Suburbs
Edward Tenner, Bloomberg
Apple Inc.’s stunning new Campus 2 in Cupertino, California, will be one of Steve Jobs’ lasting legacies when completed in 2015. For better or worse, he was thinking differently to the end, striving for geographic self-sufficiency even as many other high-technology enterprises across the country were starting to return to city life. Will this approach, and the complex that embodies it, renew Apple’s culture of excellence or retard it?

Pierre Igot, Betalogue
In other words, it completely ignores your request to replace the existing file.

Review: ZAGGfolio For iPad Air
James Rogers, ISource
I much prefer the traditional keyboard layout of the ZAGGfolio to the competition, and that is a big deal with me. I also love having the freedom of movement and viewing angles that the rear hinge offers. And the backlight is great bonus that can be a lifesaver when you need it.
Review: Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Folio For The iPad Air
James Rogers, ISource
Logitech’s Ultrathin Keyboard Folio delivers by far the best keyboard case typing experience you can get for the iPad Air. The keyboard is wide, and the keys are well spaced, and they also have a nice action and solid feel.
Brazil Wants To Know Why Apple Bills Its Citizens In US Dollars
Sharif Sakr, Engadget
Apple prices everything there in US dollars, which has led Brazil's Consumer Protection Secretariat to write a formal letter to the company requesting an explanation.
Also:
• Why Apple In Brazil Is Charging Its Customers In Dollars Not Reals (Tim Worstall, Forbes): So the Brazilian system asks that Apple, instead of remitting that 70%, must hold on to 15-25% of that sum which the writers of the software/tunes/whatever must then try to claim back from the Brazilian tax authorities after Apple has paid it over.
The New Mac Pro: Not For The Faint Of Wallet
Ted Landau, Macworld
The new Mac Pro is a machine whose design shows no evidence of having been constrained by concerns over who could afford it. If this means that the Mac Pro’s escalating costs put the machine out of reach of many potential buyers, well, the iMac and MacBook Pro are always there to fill the void.
Apple Objects To Monitor’s Fees In E-Books Antitrust Case
Andrew Zajac, Bloomberg
Bromwich’s invoice for his first two weeks of work was $138,432, the equivalent of 75 percent of a federal judge’s annual salary, Apple said in its filing, which described the administrative surcharge as “unprecedented in Apple’s experience.”

Some Additional Tidbits On Apple’s Gift Card-based Black Friday Deal
Mark Gurman, 9 To 5 Mac
According to the person, the standard discounts for Black Friday required several months of preparation (each year) from Apple across several teams within the company. Apple was required to manually update the pricing for every product within its entire backend system for both the online and retail stores. This process is said to have been anything but seamless, and it was, as the source put it, a waste of time and resources. Gift cards, instead, take little effort from Apple to ship alongside products, and in some cases, the money savings (overall) will be even greater for the customer.

Just Who Is Apple's Most Frustrated Fanboi? Surprise – It's GOOGLE
Jack Clark, The Register
One reason why Google chooses to avoid Apple's two main management tools of Apple OS 10 Server and Apple Remote Desktop is that they "break down when you get over 50, 100, 200 machines you're managing," he said. "We've lost [Apple's] attention as far as enterprise management tools."

Popular iOS App QuizUp Is Full Of Security Holes, Fix On The Way
Aaron Souppouris, The Verge
The problem, explains Richter, lies with QuizUp's matching system. Richter is (intentionally) a little vague about how and when information is transmitted, but it appears the app sends "full names, Facebook IDs, email addresses, pictures, genders, birthdays, and even location data" in plaintext over SSL. "I have been able to access the personal information of hundreds of people who I have never met," says Richter.

Apple Confirms Acquisition Of 3-D Sensor Startup PrimeSense
Mike Isaac and John Paczkowski, All Things D
Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet confirmed the PrimeSense deal with the boilerplate comment the company typically provides when news of one of its acquisitions leaks: “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”
PrimeSense became widely known in the sensor technology space for its early work with Microsoft’s Kinect gaming product, which uses cameras and depth sensors to capture players’ motions and incorporate them into Xbox gameplay. (Microsoft now deploys its own homegrown sensor technology for the current generation of Kinect devices, which ship with the recently launched Xbox One.)

Can't Trust This: Inconsistencies Shake Faith In Apple

To Mini Or To Air, That Is The iPad Question
MG Siegler, TechCrunch
It’s always going to be easier to perceive a difference in physical size and weight than it is in speed and resolution. The former two can take advantage of muscle memory (size, in particular) while the latter two often need points of comparison to be truly appreciated.
That’s why I’d vote for the iPad Air if someone were to ask me what iPad I’d recommend getting if I had to pick only one. To me, it feels like the more impressive upgrade this year and perhaps even more so next year, if a larger screen iPhone were to be unveiled.

Disney Struggles To Make Its Free Gaming Apps Pay
Brooks Barnes, New York Times
Disney must step carefully because of its focus on young players. Consumer protection groups are concerned that children are being asked to buy things during the heat of game play; Apple recently settled a class-action lawsuit over in-app spending by children. Retina iPad Mini Display: How Icons, Text, And Comics Compare
Rene Ritchie, iMore
The Retina iPad mini has an LED-backlit LCD screen with in-plane switching (IPS) for a wide viewing angle. It also has a 2048x1536 display crammed down to 326ppi to fit into a 7.9-inch screen. That's the same pixel count as the iPad Air, the same density as the iPhone 5s, and the same screen size as the original iPad mini. (And yes, the same narrow color gamut as the original iPad mini as well.) So what does all this mean for the stuff we look at all day, the icons, the comics and graphics, and the text?

Why This Gay Man Thinks Apple Shouldn't Erase Its Offensive "Gay" Definition
Andrew Godinich, PolicyMic
While I can definitely sympathize with this young woman, who doubtless had the best intentions at heart, I emphatically agree with Apple's decision. Erasing a definition is not going to end gay bashing. Words have power. They have history. Whitewashing that history will not contribute to solving the problem of homophobia. In fact, it perpetuates it.

The second is that, as a general principle, dictionaries are supposed to describe rather than prescribe - it's society's fault that the word gay is used in this undoubtedly hurtful and damaging way, not the dictionary makers'. The dictionary does at least include the label offensive.

Making The Most Of Contacts In Mavericks
Alicia Katz Poolock, TidBITS
Mac OS X’s Contacts application, formerly known as Address Book, receives a fair amount of criticism for being too simplistic. At first glance, this criticism seems true, but as you delve into the program, you discover it has a surprising level of depth, as well as tight integration into the Apple ecosystem.
Let’s take a look at how to modify the Contacts interface to your liking, manage your contacts, work with contact information, and examine utilities that make up for its shortcomings.

When looking up the definition of the word "gay" on her laptop, she saw that Apple's dictionary also included its informal definition, meaning foolish or stupid.

First Look: iPad Mini With Retina Display
Jason Snell, Macworld
The iPad Air is slightly faster, has a bigger screen (but not a higher resolution), is larger and heavier, and costs $100 more for the same capacity. Which one’s right for you? It seems to me that the most important parts of the comparison will be screen size (do you want everything just a little bit larger?), physical size (do you want the smallest iPad possible?), and price. I’m not sure where I’m going to come down on those issues, but they seem to be the most important ones.
Also:
• Retina iPad mini: First Impressions (Federico Viticci, MacStories): After spending five hours with the device, I think that the increased weight is noticeable if you pay attention but I believe it’ll disappear after a few days. The best way I can describe it is that, if you really want to feel a weight difference, the new mini feels “dense” in the back – which is probably due to a new weight distribution of components.
• Hands on With the iPad mini with Retina Display (David Sparks): The new iPad Mini with retina display is a lot faster than its predecessor. Even doing silly little things like jumping between applications are noticeably quicker. It renders webpages faster, loads complicated applications faster, does Garage Band tracks faster, and generally kicks some serious ass.
• Review: iPad Mini is pricey, but brings top-notch experience with speed, display improvements (Anick Jesdanun, Associated Press): The new device has caught up to the point that it deserves to be called a Mini version of the full-size iPad.

When the configurations match up in price, the MacBook Air is difficult to justify when the Pro is in the picture. Thoughts On Nike+ Move For The iPhone

Nike’s polish on Nike+ Move is remarkable, especially for the price of free. Lots of graphs and activity info is in motion, and Nike’s color palette is bright and captivating. The bigger story here is that the iPhone 5s is now officially a serious fitness device to be contended with. I’ve said before that the M7 in the iPhone 5s is Apple’s testbed for a potential wearable, but now I’m asking if they even need one.

Why Apple Bought $578M Worth Of Sapphire In Advance
Matthew Panzarino, TechCrunch
Sapphire, specifically synthetic, manufactured sapphire, has several properties that make it of interest to Apple. First of all, sapphire is superior to glass, even Corning’s Gorilla Glass material, in several ways. Synthetic sapphire has no color, as it’s a single crystal grown to be optically transparent — making it look very similar to glass. But it’s also extremely hard — 9 on the Mohs scale — which means better scratch resistance.

An iPhone Tester Caught In Apple's Supply Chain
Cam Simpson, Bloomberg
Apple discovered this during an audit of a Taiwan component maker in 2008. An Apple auditor saw the passports of foreign workers stacked in a safe, according to a person familiar with Apple’s audits. The manager said his workers owed money to recruiters, so he kept their passports to guarantee they paid up. Apple realized many migrants could be trapped abroad for months or even years because of seized passports, debts, and interest, says Dionne Harrison, a London-based executive for the consulting firm Impactt, which works with Apple. Apple, along with others, calls that bonded labor, a form of modern-day indentured servitude, one step removed from slavery. Apple blames the worst abuses on companies that rely on a daisy chain of payment-demanding brokers and recruiters that reaches “all the way back [to] the worker’s home village,” as Apple put it in its 2010 supplier report.
Because these problems are widespread in the industry, Apple in 2009 tried barring suppliers from using workers who had been charged more than one month’s net factory wages. But by Apple’s own accounting, the problem got worse. Last year the company’s audits turned up $6.4 million in fees paid by workers beyond the company’s prescribed limit—compared with $6.7 million in the previous four years combined. And Apple audited fewer plants last year than it did in 2011. The company orders its suppliers to refund workers charged beyond its limit.

Clear+ allows users to create any sort of list that you might find useful, from the aspirational - planning dreams - to the more routine and frankly boring - shopping, paying bills and such like. Whatever, it's a good look, one that is easy to read and act upon, helped by a simple onscreen guide available at first launch.

How To Negotiate Better Apple Pricing For Your Business
Angus Kidman, Lifehacker
Your best path for feedback to Apple may be signing up with a large reseller. “Apple’s channel partners are very influential with Apple,” Sullivan said. However, even then there’s a catch.” Apple are merciless when it comes to firing them — it’s a ‘one strike, you’re out’ deal.”
Workplace Equality Is Good For Business
Tim Cook, Wall Street Journal
Those who have suffered discrimination have paid the greatest price for this lack of legal protection. But ultimately we all pay a price. If our coworkers cannot be themselves in the workplace, they certainly cannot be their best selves. When that happens, we undermine people's potential and deny ourselves and our society the full benefits of those individuals' talents.
So long as the law remains silent on the workplace rights of gay and lesbian Americans, we as a nation are effectively consenting to discrimination against them.
Congress should seize the opportunity to strike a blow against such intolerance by approving the Employment Nondiscrimination Act.

Apple’s iCloud Keychain: It Works, But With Frustrating Limitations
Jon Brodkin, Ars Technica
The short version is that iCloud Keychain does a good job of automatically entering passwords in websites on Apple's Safari browser, both with iOS devices and Macs. It does not work with any third-party browsers on OS X or iOS. It cannot fill in passwords on an iOS app unless the developer of that app has done some legwork to integrate with iCloud Keychain. Worse, it stores the passwords in an inconvenient location on iOS, making it hard to copy and paste passwords for those cases when iCloud Keychain can't automatically fill them in.

Apple iPad Air
Sascha Segan, PC Magazine
I have mixed feelings about the bottom-ported stereo speakers. If you're listening to music with the iPad flat on a table, it's much louder than competing tablets with back-ported speakers. But if you're playing a game or video while holding the tablet in landscape mode, all of the sound pumps out of one side.
Review: Apple's Late-2013 13-Inch MacBook Pro With Retina Display
Neil Hughes, AppleInsider
The real difference with Apple's latest MacBook Pro models is what's on the inside. Namely, Intel's latest-generation Haswell processors, which boost performance and battery life.
iPad Air Delivers 24 Hours Of Battery Life As LTE Hotspot
Anand Lal Shimpi, AnandTech
A total of 24.08 hours and over 8GB of transfers later, the iPad Air finally died. Just like last time, you'll likely burn through your monthly data allotment before you run out of power.
On The Pathological Way Apple Deals With Its Customers
Lawrence Lessig
For example, if the problem I have confronted with Mail.app using Gmail (which I describe more below) is something Apple considers a bug, then I’m willing to live with it for a while till Apple fixes it. If it isn’t a bug, but is a feature (insanely but whatever), then I will spend the time (and incredible bandwidth waste) to deal with the problem in the way the Apple volunteers suggest — either by changing the way Gmail works, or getting a new mail application.
So in a line, it is indecent for Apple to sit by silently while its customers waste thousands of hours (in the aggregate) trying to deal with the problems its “upgrades” create, when the simple act of describing what it intends to fix could save its customers those thousands of hours.

Lucida Grande “Retina-optimized” In OS X Mavericks
Tim Ahrens, Just Another Blog
I’m glad to see this update as it shows Apple still takes typography seriously. Although like most designers, I don’t like the use of Helvetica as a UI font in iOS, there are also promising font-related developments. While small tweaks like the ones we looked at here may seem nearly insignificant, it shows there are efforts to improve type in Apples OSes.

New E-Book Services Borrow A Page From Netflix
Bonnie Cha, All Things D
If you’re a voracious reader, you know that keeping up with your habit can get expensive, whether you’re buying physical books or e-books. The public library makes for a good alternative, but sometimes there’s a waiting list for a title. And if you’re looking for a digital version to borrow, your options are limited. But what if you could instantly access an unlimited number of books right on your smartphone or tablet every month, for about the price of a paperback?
Patent War Goes Nuclear: Microsoft, Apple-owned “Rockstar” Sues Google
Joe Mullin, Ars Technica
Patent insiders knew that the Nortel portfolio was the patent equivalent of a nuclear stockpile: dangerous in the wrong hands, and a bit scary even if held by a "responsible" party.
This afternoon, that stockpile was finally used for what pretty much everyone suspected it would be used for—launching an all-out patent attack on Google and Android. The smartphone patent wars have been underway for a few years now, and the eight lawsuits filed in federal court today by Rockstar Consortium mean that the conflict just hit DEFCON 1.

15-Inch Retina MacBook Pro Review: A Tale Of Two Laptops

The $1999 2.0GHz MacBook Pro’s lack of discrete graphics took a toll on its Cinebench and 3D game performance, but it’s a much faster system than the high-end 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro. The $2599 2.3GHz Retina MacBook Pro was faster in just about every way than the system it replaces and would be a great fit for owners of older Mac portables looking for a high-performance laptop.
